Ban on porn sites a boost for CD/DVD traders

The ban on porn websites has come as a shot in the arm for those involved in the manufacturing of pirated CDs and DVDs.

The CD and DVD sellers said they had been catering to only migrant population so far. But the ban on porn websites would boost their business.

The old city, including Bhadaur House and Meena Bazar, are considered to be a hub of pirated porn CD and DVD business.

While in other places such as Ghumar Mandi and Sarabha Nagar, games, movie songs and pornographic material are uploaded on mobile phones.

“We are now planning to keep computers and other devices to load such stuff on mobile phones as the surfing of porn sites would no longer be easy,” said a trader.

Meanwhile, a group of youngsters said the government’s move of banning the surfing of porn content would be of little help as the micro blogging websites, such as WhatsApp, are an easy tool for sharing pornographic material.

Parents elated

Parents, especially of teenagers, are elated at the government’s move of banning porn sites on the Internet.

“It is an encouraging step. We have to act responsibly for our future generations. A major part of education now Internet-based. Students spend most of their time surfing porn sites. Though we have tried to put firewalls on the computer, its application remains limited. It is a vulnerable age and children tend to go astray. The initiative needs to be seen in the right spirit. The move is not infringing on privacy. Instead, these porn websites are spoiling the youth,” said Kanwar Jatinder Singh Bajwa, vice-president of the Ludhiana Football Association.
