City residents celebrated Independence Day with zeal and enthusiasm. Various events to mark the occassion were organised across the city.

Goodwill Park, BRS Nagar

Independence Day was celebrated at Goodwill Park in Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar (B Block). The national flag was hoisted by Goodwill Park Management Committee member CL Virmani. Ramesh Kaura, president of the committee, said occasions became joyous if celebrated with the near and dear ones and thanked residents for being a part of the celebrations. The members sang the national anthem and refreshments were served.

CMCH

Independence Day was celebrated at Christian Medical College and Hospital with patriotic spirit. The programme began with prayers and thanks-giving service at the college chapel, followed by flag hoisting, march past and cultural events. Abraham G Thomas, Director, CMC, was the chief guest. He was welcomed by Abi M Thomas, Principal, Christian Dental College (CDC).

Abraham G Thomas talked about the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters. He talked about the missionaries such as Dr Edith Brown (Founder, CMC Ludhiana), who left the comfort of her country and came to serve people in India. Patriotic songs, dances and a skit were presented by students.

Bharat Vikas Parishad

The Bharat Vikas Parishad, Shaheed Sukhdev branch, celebrated Independence Day at Bhai Baaj Public School, Tajpur Road. National flag was hoisted and national anthem was sung on the occasion. Fifteen outstanding students were honoured.

FICO

The Federation of Industrial and Commercial Organisation celebrated Independence Day at the MSME Development Institute. Subhash Lakra from S K Bikes Limited was the chief guest and Sukhdial Singh Basant from Rattan Hammers was the guest of honour. Ten eminent personalities were honoured for their contribution to the development of the country.

Income Tax Department

A function was organised by the Income Tax Department to mark the occasion of Independence Day at Aaykar Bhawan in Rishi Nagar. Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Binay K Jha, hoisted the flag. Various dance and musical performances were given by officers and students. Principal Director of Income Tax Parneet Sachdev; Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, R Bhama; Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), AbhaRani; Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), Pirthi Lal; Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), Davinder Kumar; State President of Indian Taxation Advocates Association, Jatinder Khurana; Additional Commissioners of Income Tax, Arwinder Singh and Ritesh Parmar; Joint Commissioners of Income Tax, Manav Bansal and Rohit Mehra; and executive members of the Taxation Bar Association were present.

Brick-kiln Owners’ Association

Members of the Ludhiana Brick-kiln Owners’ Association assembled to pay homage to the martyrs. They garlanded the statue of martyr Major Bhupinder Singh of 1965 war and remember his sacrifice for the mother land .

Radisson Blu

Independence Day was celebrated at Radisson Blu Hotel MBD and MBD Neopolis Mall with gusto. Visitors at the mall and guests at the hotel expressed their patriotism and love for the motherland by participating in various patriotic activities. A bagpiper band added grandeur to the flag hoisting that was conducted in the presence of the staff of the hotel and the mall.

Cong Women Wing

The Women Congress Wing celebrated Independence Day and Janamashtami by organising a langar at Chuhadpur. Rakesh Pandey, MLA, women wing president Leena Taparia were the chief guest.

District Congress Committee

District Congress Committee, Ludhiana (Urban), celebrated Independence Day at Congress Bhawan. Congress district president Gurpreet Gogi unflured the national flag.

Jama Masjid

The Shahi Imam of Punjab, Maulana Habib-ur-Rehman Sani Ludhianvi, unflured the national flag at Jama Masjid in Field Gunj. The Shahi Imam said Muslims had sacrificed their lives in the freedom movement and were always ready to do anything for the country.

Indian Medical Association

Independence Day was celebrated by the Ludhiana branch of the Indian Medical Association at the IMA House with enthusiasm. Avinash Jindal, IMA president, unfurled the national flag. He paid homage to the martyrs.

United Cycle and Parts Manufacturers Association

The United Cycle and Parts Manufacturers’ Association unfurled the national flag on its premises to mark Independence Day. The celebrations were held under the leadership of Charanjit Singh Vishivkarma, president of the UCPMA. Small and medium entrepreneurs said post-Independence policies of the government had promoted the corporate sector instead of the small-scale industry. They appealed to the Central Government to make policies to save the small scale industry.
