The trials to select talented hockey players (boys U-18) will be held at Jarkhar village on July 5 and 6, 20 km from here.

Harbans Singh, in charge of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Training Centre, Ludhiana, said players would be selected to register with the SAI Extension Centre (day scholar) running at Jarkhar under its programme to develop the game of hockey in this part of the state.

Five players from the previous batch would be retained for this centre, while 20 new recruits would be selected, who would receive training-cum-coaching as per the SAI norms, Singh said. The extension centre started by SAI has yielded desired results, as a number of its trainees have brought glory to the centre as well as state by taking part in major hockey tournaments. Those interested are advised to bring their birth certificates in original to ascertain their age besides achievement certificates to prove their eligibility.

The selected boys would be provided facilities such as stipend, sports kit and training in addition to other benefits as per the guidelines of the Sports Authority of India, Harbans Singh said.
