Diwali, the festival of lights, is just around the corner, it is important to make our pets comfortable and safe as noise of crackers can be terrifying for your pets. The festive season should not bring inconvenience to pets and birds.

Dr Kirti Dua, In-charge, Centre for Wildlife Studies, and Prof Veterinary Medicine, GADVASU, said the noise of fireworks during Diwali scares young birds or puppies so much that they get disoriented, and at times lose their hearing sense temporarily.

He advised that during the fireworks on Diwali, keep your animal indoors and away from smoke of crackers, which may cause severe respiratory distress.

To make pets feel safe and comfortable in the house, close the curtains and leave the radio or TV on to mask the sound of crackers outside. Some old clothes with your scent on them can also be kept near the pet.

“Take your pets out for a walk and feed them before the celebrations begin. A tired and well-fed dog will be far less anxious during the night. Festive food can be unhealthy and even dangerous for your pets. Keep sweets, puja material, diyas and candles out your pet’s reach,” he said.

“Mostly people prefer to light firecrackers in open spaces near trees which scare birds. These birds fly away and keep hovering in the sky. They soon get lost and can’t find the way back to their nests,” he added.

Points to keep in mind

  • If the dog runs for its bed, towards cupboard or under the bed, leave it there, and allow it to follow its natural instinct.
  • Do not soothe and comfort a scared dog, it will only increase the problem.
  • Make sure your dog is well identified in case your dog escapes.
  • If you have a nervous dog, a very old pet or a pet with a heart problem, talk to your veterinarian before the Diwali begins.
  • GADVASU Vet Hospital can be contacted at 0161-2414010.
