Second round of the National Deworming Day (NDD) remained a low-key affair in the town and surrounding areas.

While the observance of the day was restricted to the headquarter of the Senior Medical Officer at Fatehgarh Panj Garayeeyan village, some medical and social organisations came forward to organise camps for giving deworming tablets to children between 1 and 19 years of age. The village is situated around 25 km from the Primary Health Centre.

According to the National Rural Health Mission of the Centre’s Health Department, August 10 will be observed as National Deworming Day in all states and union territories, barring Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

According to the instructions of the government, children at all Anganwadi Centres should be administered albendazole tablet or any other substitute anti-worming tablet supplied by the Health Department. Efforts should be made to give these tablets to all children between one and 19 years of age by organising camps or visiting educational institutes.

Regrettably, the Health Department authorities have sent Chief Pharmacist Pardeep Sood on deputation to some other town. However, the staff at the Civil Hospital had remained on toes fighting the recent outbreak of diarrhoea. “As the office of the Senior Medical Officer is in Fatehgarh Panj Grayeeyan, the special day was observed by authorities concerned there,” said Sood.

Dr Ravinder Sharma, Rotary Club secretary, said separate teams of doctors, led by Dr Sunit Hind and Dr Gurtej Singh, had administered deworming tablets to children by organising camps at various places in the town and surrounding localities.

Social Welfare Organisation member Tarsem Garg and former Municipal Council president Ravinder Puri said special camps for administering deworm tablets would be organised at various schools in the coming days. Sources said mass deworming was undertaken to tackle the worm infections and infection-related disorders among children.
