In a series of braid chopping incidents occurring throughout the state, two fresh cases were reported from Galib Kalan village, near Jagraon, during the past 24 hours. The incidents have spread panic among villagers.

In the first case, braid of a middle-aged woman, identified as Jaswinder Kaur, was chopped. The woman was sleeping along with her husband and other family members in her house. She went to washroom at 10:30 pm.

Chamkaur Singh, husband of the victim, said Jaswinder used to tie a cloth on her head while sleeping out of fear of braid chopping incidents in all over the state.

“When Jaswinder returned from washroom she complained pressure on her shoulder. I asked her to take off the cloth tied on her head. When she did, we found that her braid was chopped,” said Chamkaur.

A police team led by DSP, Jagraon, Kanwarpal Singh, and the SHO, Raminderjit Singh, visited the village and started investigation in the morning. When officials were investigating the matter, they came to know that braid of a young girl was also chopped at another house located at some distance in the same village.

When the police team visited the second spot, it found the braid of girl chopped while she was lying unconscious. The police also found a seizer nearby. The victim has been identified as Gurmit Kaur (24), a resident of Ajeetwal village. She had come to meet her sister at Galib Kalan village.

Nirbhai Singh, brother-in-law of the girl, said he had gone to Jagraon for some important work when the incident took place. He said, “My family members informed me on phone about the incident following which I returned home.”

The SHO, Raminderjit Singh, said victim’s brother-in-law stated to the police that the girl had been under mental stress for past some time.

“The police found nothing suspicious from both the houses. However, we have recorded statements of family members of both victim’s and further investigation is on. We are probing the matter from various angles,” the SHO added.
