Jagraon, May 22
The century-old main gate of the old grain market of Jagraon will be reconstructed soon. After being neglected by successive state governments, a few NGOs and the Ahrtiya Association of Jagraon have taken up the responsibility of reconstructing the gate.
As per information, the gate was constructed in 1902 by an English man, Anderson Gunj. Since then this gate has neither been reconstructed nor repaired despite its dilapidated condition. Although residents of Jagraon have been raising the demand of reconstruction of the gate for a long time, the consecutive governments did not pay any heed.
The government primary school, being run from the roof of the gate, was shut some time ago due to bad condition of the structure.
According to the Jagraon Ahrtiya Association president, Surjit Singh Kaler, “The construction work of this gate will start after dismantling it. Baba Arwinder Singh of Nanaksar sect will also cooperate in the construction work.”
Meanwhile, a representative of the Virsa Sambhal Manch, Mohinder Singh Sidhwan, has urged NGOs to maintain ancient look of the gate while reconstructing it.
