Nuffield scholars visit Doraha school, college

Nuffield farming scholars from New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and Brazil visited Guru Nanak Model Senior Secondary School and Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, to interact with the management, faculty, principals and students today.

The delegation included Lara Ladyman from Western Australia; Felicity Mcleod from New South Wales, Australia; Ed Payne from Ireland; Stuart Tait from New South Wales, Australia; Matthew Fealy from Queensland, Australia; David Hichens from Langford Bristol, United Kingdom; Rebecca Hyde from New Zealand; Crispin Howlitt from Canberra, Australia; Murilo Martins F Bettarello from Brazil; and Jaap Dun from the Netherlands.

Harpratap Brar, General Secretary of the management of the institutes, and Executive Administrator Roopinder Brar informed the scholars that the institutions are catering to the needs of the disadvantaged section of society, including the rural women, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, backward classes, migrant labour, etc.

The management told them that more than 50 per cent students avail themselves of financial aid, in one form or the other, from the institutions. They were informed about the role being played by the placement cell and career guidance and counselling bureau.

The scholars were apprised of door-to-door campaigns organised by the staff to spread awareness about importance of education for women.

Pavittar Pal Singh Pangli, president of the Borlaug Farmers Association for South Asia and the Chairman of the United Farmer Empowerment Initiative, informed the scholars about how the institutions have improved the lot of the rural poor and made them capable of gaining a professional degree.
