Ludhiana, August 14

A group of around eight men beat up a security guard at a liquor vend here and snatched his weapon.

The group was celebrating the birthday of one of its members at the vend near Fountain Chowk at around 11 pm on August 11. They had a spat with the liquor vend owners as the latter wanted to close the vend while the group wanted to stay there for some more time.

Meanwhile, one of the members, who was in an inebriated state, pointed out why the security guard was “staring” at them. The security guard, Inderpreet Singh, a resident of Friends Colony, was sent by his employer to get liquor for him. The man hit him and he defended himself. Another member hit the security guard on the head with a beer bottle. While the security guard was trying to take out his .32-bore pistol in self-defence, the man snatched his weapon and beat him up again. After thrashing the security guard, they fled the scene with his weapon.

A case was registered in this regard on August 12 against unidentified persons under Section 379 (B) (theft), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (committing crime with common intention) at the Division No. 8 police station.

The police identified some members of the group in CCTV footage and rounded up Ahmed Khan, a resident of Sandhu Nagar, and Suraj Kumar, a resident of New Kundanpuri. The police also recovered the weapon from them and their motorcycles they used to flee the spot.

The ADCP, Zone 3, Surendra Lamba, said another member of the group, including Mukesh Kumar, alias Ganja, had been identified and raids were being carried out to nab him. Additional IPC sections, including 148 (rioting) and 149 (unlawful assembly), have been slapped on the arrested persons.
