Physics teachers in government schools in the state who were promoted from master cadre to lecturers in February this year are in a fix, as they have not been allotted the stations (schools where they are to teach), almost four months after the promotions.

The teachers have been teaching at high schools and now after promotions, they are to teach subjects at Senior Secondary level to class XI and class XII students. After their promotions in February, the teachers were told to continue teaching at the high schools classes where they had been teaching until the completion of the academic session this year.

However, the promoted teachers of all subjects were anxious as the stations were not allotted from last three months. There are 132 such physics teachers in the state.

“By July the new sessions are going to start for classes XI and XII, but we are yet to get any stations where we are to teach,” says Dinesh, a physics teacher.

“We were told that one of the reasons for no allotment was there were not enough vacancies at senior secondary level for Physics lecturers. But was the department not aware before the promotions were done?,” said Sanjiv Kumar, from Government School Teachers Union. He said that there were enough students and there was a need for government school Physics teachers.

Even if there are no vacancies, the posts must be created because there is a need for more Physics lecturers as non-medical stream is not being taught in many government schools and because of the non-availability of this stream in such schools, students have to opt for other streams, another government school teacher added.

The physics teachers are also going to conduct a protest rally on June 22 in Mohali because of the delay in allotment of stations to them. “We are going to carry out a protest rally in Mohali in against such dilatory attitude of the education department,” Kumar said.
