The SCD Government College, Ludhiana, took the lead in the state by establishing the first-of-its-kind ‘Student Counselling System’ as per the guidelines of the UGC.
In this regard, the college organised an inaugural function today where a seminar was held in collaboration with ReFocus Behavioural Services. The NGO provides student counselling services.
In his welcome address, the Principal, Dharam Singh Sandhu, informed the students and staff members that the UGC has made it mandatory for all institutions of higher learning to set up student counseling systems. He further elaborated that in today’s age the youth of the country is under tremendous stress and anxiety. They suffer from low esteem and undergo agonies due to academic worries and uncertainties. During this sensitive phase of life the institutions of higher learning are duty bound to provide behavioral support systems in order to shape their mental faculties, develop their creative visions and ensure a satisfactory growth of self confidence in them.
Speaking on behalf of ReFocus Behavioural Services, its founder Dr DJ Singh disclosed that the broad objective of this innovative feature is to provide a common platform towards providing psychological/counselling services for students and spreading awareness to deal effectively with their mental health issues/problems.
He further said that this model of behavioral services meant for educational institutions shall also focus upon redressal of complex behavioural problems and challenges being faced by students. He also emphasised that the area of sound mental health has been ignored for a long time now. His team of qualified, trained and accredited psychologists/counsellors gave practical demonstrations of how best to provide a thorough psychological assessment/personality reading in order to make students more confident and emotionally strong individuals.
