Raikot, August 16

The authorities remained on their toes due to the protest by activists of CITU (Centre of Indian Trade Unions) near the venue of the Independence Day celebrations here on Tuesday.

The activists, led by All-India Road Transport Workers’ Federation executive member Santokh Gill and CITU state secretary Daljit Gora, were protesting the “increasing gangsters, corruption, atrocities against minorities, women and downtrodden, drug mafias and unemployment.”

However policemen, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Surjit Singh Dhanoya, succeeded in stopping the protestors at a distance from the venue and persuaded them to discuss various issues during the meeting with the police and civic body authorties.

Santokh Singh Gill and Gora regretted that senior functionaries in the government and the state government were unconcerned about the welfare of members of lower strata.
