Ludhiana, October 13

Not just the grown-ups, even city youths seemed to be convinced about celebrating the festival of lights in a green manner.

Talking to the Ludhiana Tribune, some youngsters expressed their views about why and how they would be celebrating Diwali this year.

Speaking on the issue, Tarshveer Singh, a student of agriculture at the PAU said, “The new generation has to think for its own future now because pollution is a serious issue.” He said, “Just for moments of fun derived by burning crackers, we are creating long-term and long-lasting problems by increasing pollution. One can just let go of the vapid and empty moments of happiness gained by burning crackers and celebrate the festival by having a good time with friends, family and relatives.”

Jaskanwalpreet, also a student, says, “Rather than wasting money on crackers, it can be utilised for buying some valuables for friends and loved ones. Crackers are here now and gone the next minute turning into smoke and garbage. Wisdom should dawn on all to stop this wastage.”

Another student said for the last two years, he was using money he spent earlier on crackers on decorating his place.

Rajan Kumar said, “I now wait and buys things I need around Diwali. Unwrapping new things and using these on Diwali is a special treat that I give to myself to celebrate the festival. That makes up more than for the loss fun derived from busting crackers.”

“Diwali is essentially a festival of lights. So, it should be celebrated that way. That’s why I bought myself collections of floating candles, diyas and beautiful lamps last year. That adds to the aesthetic value and also lights up surroundings too. This year, I am going to buy an outdoor lamp to add to the festival celebrations,” says Rajinder, another student.

Gurjand Singh, however, says, “The real joy of any festival has to be with sweets and chocolates. That is the reason Diwali becomes even more special for me.”

“Just sharing and enjoying delicacies with friends and family is much more fun. A much better way to celebrate Diwali is by relishing good meals together, listening and dancing on some good music rather than inhaling smoke from crackers choking up the surroundings,” he added

Going and visiting temple for Happy Kapoor is the way to celebrate Diwali festival. “We should not forget that Diwali is a religious festival. So, I make it a point to go to temple with family. It is more blissful and peace giving. Rather than wasting away time in buying crackers, which serve absolutely no purpose, one must visit gurdwaras and temples, and contribute to some charity on this day instead,” he said.
