24 cops found stealing power in Gurugram

A vigilance team of the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) today found 24 police personnel stealing power in the Police Lines here during a raid. The team detected direct electricity supply in 17 quarters and tampering with seven electricity meters.

The meters were seized and would be sent to a laboratory for testing. Amarjeet Kataria, DSP, Vigilance, said that criminal cases would be registered against the police personnel and a departmental inquiry would also be conducted against them. Fines up to Rs 20 lakh would be imposed on the cops involved in power theft, said the DSP.

Following repeated complaints of power theft, a team under Ramniwas, Executive Engineer, Vigilance, and Amarjeet Kataria, DSP, Vigilance, conducting the raid at the Police Lines around 5.30am and checked 500 flats and houses. In the five-hour raid, 24 police personnel, from constables to inspectors, were caught stealing power.

Navin Verma, Superintending Engineer, DHBVN, Gurugram, said: “17 houses had kundi connections, while 7 meters were tampered with. The fines are being assessed on the basis of the actual power load in their houses.”
