For the past many years, orthopaedic surgery has evolved considerably with advancements in medical technology and state-of-art equipment, said Dr Rajnish Garg, professor of orthopaedics, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). So far, Dr Garg has conducted many successful arthroscopic surgeries at the DMCH.

A 55-year-old patient, Gurpreet Kaur (name changed), was operated for her shoulder problem recently. She was unable to move her shoulder due to torn muscles and was suffering from severe pain.

The patient is leading a normal healthy life after undergoing successful arthroscopic surgery, performed by Dr Garg and his team. She was discharged from the hospital a few days ago.

The department has been successfully performing various surgeries of bones and joints, which include the current arthroscopic and reconstructive techniques.

According to Dr Garg, the use of arthroscopy surgery in treating dislocated shoulders and damaged knees has revolutionised orthopaedic surgery in many ways.

Now-a-days many orthopaedic surgeons opt for arthroscopic surgery rather than performing traditional operations to repair or replace joints. Arthroscopic surgery is a procedure in which thin flexible instruments are used to view inside of the joint and make repairs with minimal incisions.

Dr Garg said shoulder injuries were quite common with physically active people, who played sports or were involved in road side accidents.

“It is highly advisable that dislocated shoulders should be treated in an absolutely proper manner rather than seeking consultation of quacks, who claim themselves to be natural healers of bone-related problems,” he added.

He said, “Treating shoulder injury through arthroscopic surgery is highly recommended as it involves minimum hospitalisation of a day or two, better early recovery, very small incision and negligible chance of infections.”
