The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Ambala, has awarded compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh each to two rape victims under the Haryana Victim Compensation Scheme, 2013. The cheques were handed over to the prosecutrix by Additional District and Sessions Judge Narender Shura while Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM)-cum-Secretary, Archana Yadav was also present on the occasion.
A case was registered in June 2015 at the Ambala Sadar police station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The victim is mentally retarded and the accused was held guilty. Another case was registered in June 2015 at the Baldev Nagar police station under Sections 363/366 (A) and 376 of the IPC. The accused has been convicted for the commission of offence.
The CJM said: “No amount of financial assistance can compensate the victim in such cases. However, in order to enable the victim to rehabilitate, a compensation amount is awarded."
She said: “The state government had enacted the Victim Compensation Scheme-2013 for providing financial help to the victim or dependents who suffered loss or injury as a result of the crime and required rehabilitation. The relief is provided if the family’s annual income is less than Rs 4.5 lakh.”
To claim the compensation, the crime should be reported within 48 hours of its occurrence.
