The recent downpour exposed the district administration’s laid back approach towards maintenance of drains in the city. Though rain brought some respite from heat, it also led to waterlogging in residential areas where drains had not been cleaned up.

As a result, colonies, including residences of the Public Health Engineering Minister Ghanshyam Saraf and CLP leader Kiran Choudhary were submerged in knee-deep water causing inconvenience to residents. Sources said though a maintenance fund had been allocated, but nothing was done to clean the sewer lines and prevent waterlogging.

Slamming the district administration for its ill-preparedness, Pawan Anchal, an RTI activist, said, “One could judge the level of preparation from the fact that generator sets did not have fuel to pump out water, thereby, inundating residential areas.” He sought action against erring officials, too.

Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party leader Lalit Naharia said no development was visible on the ground though Rs 2,800 crore had been allocated to the Public Health Department.

On the other hand, Public Health and Engineering Minister Ghanshayam Saraf claimed swift action was being taken by the administration to drain the rain water.
