Dharamsala, February 16

The Kangra police have launched a campaign against drunken driving in the district. SP Sanjeev Gandhi said last year, about 15 persons lost their lives due to drunken driving in Kangra district. Besides, many others sustained serious injuries.

He said the police were using alcometers to check drunken driving. “We are filing about 15 challans on a daily basis against drunken driving. The police were invoking the provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act to detain the guilty.

The detained are released with an assurance from someone that they would not repeat the act. We hope that the act of the police would deter people from drunken driving, the SP said.

Earlier, the Kangra police had launched a drive against two-wheeler drivers. The police took the help from petrol pump owners during the drive. Petrol pump owners refused petrol to those two-wheeler drivers who were not wearing helmets.

The campaign of the police has delivered results and compliance for wearing helmets while driving two wheelers has increased to more than 90 per cent in the district.
