BJP MP Shanta Kumar today released Rs 3 lakh from his MPLAD funds for repair and maintenance of statues of martyrs Captain Vikram Batra and Major Somnath.

Two days ago this newspaper had carried the news item regarding poor upkeep of statues of martyrs installed at the Vikram Batra Stadium and Municipal Complex here. Shanta released the money to Kangra Deputy Commissioner CP Verma with a condition that SDM Ajit Bhardwaj would personally look after the renovation work of both statues. He said if more money was required, he would sanction.

The BJP MP regretted the fact that despite the plight of both statues was highlighted, the state government remained unconcerned.

He said the government should constitute a trust or society in every sub-division comprising official and non-official members who could maintain the statues.
