A massive fire broke out at Nahar Industrial Enterprises Ltd, Lalru, today. No casualties were reported in the incident but around 20,000 cotton bales kept in the mill and the godown worth about Rs 2 crore were gutted in fire, sources said.

Employees present on the premises saw smoke billowing out of the godown of the factory. They informed the owners and the fire brigade reached the spot in no time.

As per the information available from the factory sources, the fire broke out at the processing unit-II of Nahar Industrial Enterprises Ltd at around 2.45 pm in the godown No. 5 and 6.

The sources further added that the fire continued to fume as huge stocks of cotton bales were placed in the godown. The exact cause of fire was yet to be ascertained, said one of the officials from the factory.

“The magnitude of the fire could be gauged from the fact that the local administration had to arrange fire tenders from Chandigarh, Mohali and Ambala. As many as eight fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the fire,” said a source.

Manjeet Singh, Fire Officer, Dera Bassi, claimed to have received the information around 3 pm, and subsequently the fire engines were rushed to the spot. The Dera Bassi fire brigade rushed two fire tenders with the team of firemen to extinguish the flames. After a struggle of over four hours, the firemen could control the blaze. The fire reportedly spread to the other section of the unit and destroyed raw materials, besides infrastructure said the sources.

The rescue work that started around 3.10 pm went on till evening. The fire officials added that the flames had spread over a wide area and it took nearly over four hours to douse it completely. Even after the fire was extinguished, the waste material kept smoldering and one fire tender was stationed at the spot to sprinkle water on regular intervals to check recurrence of the blaze, added the fire officer.

Kamal Oswal, owner of the company, said: “The estimated loss due to fire is worth about Rs 2 crore. The exact amount can be ascertained only after proper verification of the stock material.”
