Hisar villagers damage liquor vend

Liquor vends in villages are irking the villagers in many districts. The issue was a primary concern at the meeting of the Public Grievances Redressal Committee chaired by the Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Rao Narbir Singh here today.

Rachna Devi, sarpanch of the district’s Kinala village, said the panchayat had opposed the liquor vend adjoining the village and also written to the administration two months ago. The vend was an inconvenience to the residents, especially women and students, she said.

The minister, however, said: “Anyone who wants to drink has a right to do so”. He promised to take an action against illegal liquor-selling points in the village.

Meanwhile, residents of the district’s Petwar village today damaged a newly opened vend and threw liquor boxes out. Village sarpanch Rajender Prasad said the panchayat had taken a resolution to not let any liquor vend open near the village. The women had also decided to boycott any candidate who tried to lure voters by liquor during the panchayat elections.
