Chandigarh, March 30

Finally, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has closed the chapter of setting up a plant to convert plastic waste into oil.

A decision in this regard was taken recently at a meeting held at the MC office, Sector 17.

In the recently passed annual Budget 2017-18 by the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, there was no mention of the Budget for the plant.

A senior MC official said as of now, the chapter had been closed. In future, if they got any interesting proposal, they could consider it.

Meanwhile, the MC has also made all arrangements to hand over the garbage processing plant at Dadu Majra to a Mohali-based firm. The private firm will start running the plant from April 1 in place of existing firm Jaypee, which is running the plant.

Last year, the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation had also accorded an approval to the agenda item to set up a plastic-to-fuel plant at the garbage dumping ground, Dadu Majra.

A four-member MC team had even visited the Chennai plant. The report of the four-member team, which had gone to Chennai to study the technicalities and feasibility of a plastic-to-fuel plant, had proposed to set up such an environment-friendly plant in the city.

According to the plan, nearly 12 tonne of plastic that is generated daily as part of garbage would be processed in this plant. The plant would convert the plastic into crude oil. Nearly 10 plastic collection centres across the city in the existing Sehaj Safai Kendras would also be developed as per plan.
