Srinagar, October 24

Some unknown gunmen fired at J&K Minister Abdul Rehman Veeri’s residence in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Monday evening.

Minister for Public Works and Parliamentary affairs Veeri — a top PDP leader — was not present during the shooting.

Sources said some gunmen fired at minister’s residence at Veeri, Bijbehara — some 55 kms from Srinagar. Policemen guarding the house retaliated.

“The militants fled taking the advantage of the darkness,” a police officer said.

It could not be established immediately if the militants had planned to snatch the policemen’s rifles.

Veeri, 59, was elected from Bijbehara for the fourth consecutive term in 2014. He was first elected in the by-elections held in 1999 after Mehbooba Mufti resigned from the Assembly and the Congress party to float PDP with her father, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Veeri was re-elected in 2002 and 2008.
