Missing dealer’s body found

The body of a Gurdaspur property dealer, who was missing since February 13, was found from the Beas near Terkiana village on Friday.

The body of a Gurdaspur property dealer, who was missing since February 13, was found from the Beas near Terkiana village on Friday. Ranjit Singh went missing from Jhanda Lubana village of Gurdaspur district. Some fishermen saw the body and informed the police. His family members alleged it to be a murder due to police “negligence”.

Civil surgeon fined

The Right to Service (RTS) Commission on Friday imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000 on an Amritsar civil surgeon for failing to provide birth certificate in stipulated time. Disposing of a petition filed by Balwinder Singh of Labha Dariya village, RTS Commissioner Dr Dalbir Singh Verka also imposed a fine of Rs 2,500 on a clerk responsible for the unwarranted delay in delivery services.

SC panel seeks MEA help

The Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission has sought assistance of the Union Ministry of External Affairs to bring back 13 Dalit Punjabi youth stranded in Jordan. Commission chairman Rajesh Bagha said the youths had gone to Jordan in search of employment. He said the youths called the commission from Jordan seeking help.

Couple killed in accident

A couple was killed and their children seriously injured when their car rammed into a stationary truck near Ghuman on Friday. The truck that was parked in the middle of the road reportedly didn’t have reflectors. The deceased have been identified as Kamal Nain Singh and Manju, residents of Amritsar.  They were on their way back home from Nangal, when their car collided with the truck that was overloaded with sugarcane.

Longowal residents protest

Residents of Longowal and nearby areas on Friday staged a dharna near Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa’s residence here to voice their grievances. They demanded the posting of adequate number of doctors in the government hospital at Longowal village, filling of posts of teachers in both Government Senior Secondary Schools, closure of two liquor vends situated within a 100-m area of a school and another in a populated area.

College told to refund fees

The Permanent Lok Adalat on Friday directed the Continental College of Engineering, Jalbehra, to refund a fee of Rs 2,61,450 to an SC student. Ranjit Kaur of Amloh alleged he was charged the money even though he was exempted from paying the fees.

2 killed in mishap

Two sanitation workers of Lalgarh Military Station were killed as a car reportedly hit their bike on Friday. The victims have been identified as Ved Pal (56) and Kailash Chander (52). Both vehicles were impounded and a case registered, the police said.

Four thieves held

Four thieves were arrested with two stolen motorcycles in Narli village, 35 km from here, on Thursday. The accused have been identified as Manjit Singh of Sabhra, Gursahib Singh, Lovejeet Singh and Dilbag Singh of Van Tara Singh village. A case has been registered against them.

2 held in murder cases

Two persons were nabbed in separate murder cases in Sriganganagar on Friday. The accused have been identified as Tirlok Chand Bhambhi of Patwa village and Gurlal Singh of Gurusar Modian village. Tirlok allegedly shot his son and Gurlal killed his wife. Cases have been registered.

Cash and gold ornaments worth lakhs were stolen from the house of Daljinder Kaur in Sandhu Enclave on Friday. A case has been registered.
