Mohali, July 22
The Mohali Municipal Commissioner Uma Shankar Gupta shot off a communiqué to the Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police and the Deputy Commissioner to provide security to his staff, responsible for lifting illegal ‘rehris’ and domesticated animals, which are let out by their owners, from the Mohali roads.
Confirming the development, MC Commissioner Gupta said “My staff is being threatened and sometimes assaulted by owners of the animals, which roam on the city roads, and illegal ‘rehriwalas’, many of whom apparently have political patronage at local level. So, the staff starts threatened while performing their duties.
Sources claimed that a superintendent had refused to perform his duty of removing ‘rehris’ and lift animals, roaming on roads and parks, here. It is to be noted that a big ruckus was created in the MC House meeting on July 15 when a list, containing names of MC councillors, including Deputy Mayor Manjit Singh Sethi and certain police officers, was produced in the meeting by the MC officials. Then allegations and counter-allegations of corruption were made against each other by the commissioner and the deputy mayor in the meeting.
The commissioner claimed that after the meeting reports published in section of media, the offenders in question had openly started threatening the MC staff, when they go for action. The MC staff said they would not go on the job till they would be provided security by the local police now onwards.
