Mohali, December 28

Now onwards, parking of vehicles on roads will cost the offenders dear. The Mohali police today kicked off a special challaning campaign to weed out the problem from the town.

While checking the hazard at various points, Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar issued directions to all Station House Officers as well as the traffic wing to start towing the vehicles parked on roads and issuing challans to the violators.

“Even those vehicles, which are found parked wrongly in parking lots, will not be spared,” said SSP Bhullar.

To continue the drive effectively, the traffic wing would be provided with two more recovery vans, said the SSP. Presently, the wing has just one recovery van.

Head constables given power to issue challan

SSP Bhullar has empowered head constables to issue challans. So far, only inspector-level officers could do so.

“We will issue challan books to head constables very soon to enable,” said Bhullar.

The police have already put things in order in front of Fortis Hospital. Earlier, the road in front of the hospital had virtually converted into a parking lot, due to which CTU buses had stopped plying on the road and changed their route.

“We have deputed a police official on the road with the instruction to take immediate action against offenders. The hazard has more or less been removed from the spot,” said Inspector SS Virk, who is in charge of the traffic wing.

SS Dhanoa, president of Citizen Welfare and Development Forum said: “It’s appreciable that the police have begun addressing the problem. The good results are already evident.”

Site of apni mandi shifted

To check parking on roads in front of apni mandis, the police have asked the authorities concerned to shift the site. SSP Bhullar said that the Apni Mandi that used to be held near Cosmo Hospital in Phase VIII every Sunday has been shifted to the open area in front of the GMADA office. “A designated parking lot has been prepared at the site,” said the SSP. Similarly, the police have created a special parking lot at Sector 68.
