Chandigarh, April 27

While everybody is talking about the stray dog menace in the city, those having pets are not coming forward for their registration.

According to figures available with the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, only 6,226 pet dogs have been registered with the civic body. As per estimates, there are around 18,000 pet dogs in the city.

As per Chandigarh Registration of Pet Dogs Bylaws, 2010, the registration of every pet dog with complete details such as their age, colour and breed is a must.

Moreover, nobody can have more than two pets and they cannot be taken to popular tourist destinations. Officials blame the lack of manpower for low registration of pets.

In 2015, the then Mayor Poonam Sharma had announced that strict action would be taken against those violating the bylaws. But till date, no action has been initiated against the violators. The MC had asked people to get their pets registered within 15 days (before July 30, 2015). — TNS
