Chandigarh, July 29
Senior dairy scientist Dr Ravinder Malik today said that promotion of indigenous cow breeds was the need of the hour as the milk of cow breeds like Jersey was said to be causing debilitating diseases.
Malik, Joint Director (Research), National Dairy Development Institute (NDRI), said several studies conducted by foreign scholars concluded that milk of foreign cow breeds contained a specific protein that caused such diseases in human beings.
“Since that (allele) is not found in milk of indigenous varieties, we should promote such varieties to reduce prevalence of such diseases,” added Malik at a conference on “Emerging trends in bovine and non-bovine dairy sector” organised by the CII. — TNS
