Rebel councillors fail to dislodge Moga Mayor

MOGA: Akshit Jain, son of former Akali MLA Joginder Pal Jain, will continue on the Mayor’s post as the rebel Akali councillors owing allegiance to senior SAD leader and former minister Jathedar Tota Singh failed to turn up in today’s House meeting.

Moga, March 24

Akshit Jain, son of former Akali MLA Joginder Pal Jain, will continue on the Mayor’s post as the rebel Akali councillors owing allegiance to senior SAD leader and former minister Jathedar Tota Singh failed to turn up in today’s House meeting.

The rebel councillors had planned to bring a vote of no confidence against Akshit, but they failed to get the support of a minimum of 34 councillors out of 50, which is mandatory as per the Punjab MC Act for dislodging the Mayor. The House meeting could not be convened by the Commissioner because of lack of quorum. The Jain family had helped Congress candidate Dr Harjot Kamal win the recent Assembly elections. Speculation is rife that the family may soon rejoin the Congress. Jain Senior could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. — TNS
