Hamirpur, December 25

More than 200 villages in Nadaun subdivision here will have a year-round irrigation facility as work on the Rs 130-crore project has started.

The scheme is being implemented on the banks of the Beas near Bilikaleshwar village. Water will be lifted from the Beas for Rail, Rangs, Plasi, Bhumpal and Jolsapper villages.

Once completed, the scheme, to be completed in two year, will help irrigate 2,980 hectares of agricultural land in 20 panchayats, said Hamirpur Division Executive Engineer Vijay Dhatwaliya.

Farmers of the area are unable to adopt latest scientific techniques for progressive farming in the absence of a regular supply for irrigation.

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, former MLA, said the scheme was started by the Congress government during its previous tenure, but the BJP government stalled the development process. He said the scheme would be completed by 2016.
