Anandpur Sahib, May 30

Tension gripped the area when a school punished students for wearing turban and ‘kara’ (steel bangle) here today. The students and their parents brought the matter to the notice of Takht Kesgarh Sahib Jathedar Giani Mal Singh following which the school management tendered an apology over the incident.

Teachers of Saint Mary School at the adjoining Jindwari village today told four students wearing turban and ‘kara’ not to enter the classroom. The teachers told them that they were supposed to wear ‘patka’ instead of turban. Two of these students informed their parents who conveyed the issue to the Jathedar.

Education Minister Daljeet Singh Cheema was informed about the row. He rushed District Education Officer Harpreet Inder Singh to the spot. Meanwhile, the Takht Jathedar convened a meeting where the matter was resolved after the school management apologised in writing.
