Tiger reserves being managed better: WII

As per the Wildlife Institute of India’s (WII) recent Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) report, tiger reserves in the country are being managed better.

There has been an improvement in the MEE score of all the 43 tiger reserves i.e. from 65 per cent in 2010 to 69 per cent in 2014.

The MEE process is a global framework to evaluate the performance of the protected areas. The evaluation assesses the importance of each tiger reserve for conservation in view of the threats to the species.

India is among the selected countries in the world that has institutionalised the MEE process for its network of protected areas.

The Corbett Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand has been rated very good as per the MEE ratings for 2014-15.

The Corbett was rated good in 2010-11 MEE ratings. A total of 17 tiger reserves fall in the very good category.

The process of work evaluation of tiger reserves in the country started in 2006, when 28 tiger reserves were independently assessed. In 2010, 39 tiger reserves were evaluated.
