Srinagar, May 18
Despite tall claims by the J&K Government for streamlining the traffic, the city continues to witness massive traffic jams every day.
Traffic jams have become order of the day and people even question the authorities concerned for not taking permanent steps to streamline the traffic congestion in Srinagar.
“Each day we are suffering because of these traffic jams. Today I travelled from Lal Chowk to Dalgate in noon and it took around an hour to cover 2-km distance,” said Shabir Ahmed, a commuter. The scene is similar on most of the city roads.
Locals allege that traffic officials are seen regulating traffic on those roads which are mostly frequented by ministers and VIPs.
Many residents have asked the government to take stringent measures and not half-hearted steps to get rid of traffic chaos in the city.
“The traffic police need to gear up and heavily penalise the violators. There are a large number of vehicles which create mess and the government needs to act tough,” said Abdul Lateef, a Kashmir University student.
A senior traffic official said the traffic jam on Monday was mainly caused due to a dharna at Dalgate.
“We are doing our bid, but the mess is because of many reasons,” said a senior traffic official. “We need to decongest city roads for smooth plying of vehicles,” he added.
