- New Delhi: Thousands of farmers from the state held a demonstration in the National Capital on Thursday in favour of their demands
- These included a special economic package for Punjab, a long-term pro-peasant agricultural policy, implementation of the Swaminathan Committee report and a ban on import of foodgrain, especially wheat.
- Union leaders said Punjab farmers were reeling under a debt worth Rs 80,000 crore. In the last 30 years, nearly two lakh families had switched to other professions, he said.
- Shinder Singh Nathuwala, president, Krantikari Kisan Union, accused the Centre of bowing before the WTO and procuring 50 lakh tonnes of wheat from foreign countries under the free-trade agreement. tns
