Woman succumbs to burn injuries

KANGRA: A 33-year-old woman of Paigah Soura village falling under Gaggal police post, who had received 85 per cent burn injuries following a self-immolation bid on Wednesday, today succumbed to her burn injuries at the Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College at Tanda, the police said here today.

A 33-year-old woman of Paigah Soura village falling under Gaggal police post, who had received 85 per cent burn injuries following a self-immolation bid on Wednesday, today succumbed to her burn injuries at the Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College at Tanda, the police said here today.

Kangra Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Surinder Sharma said the woman had made a self-immolation bid following her mental and physical torture by her in-laws.

The SDPO said Arpana was married to Bhim Singh of Paigah Soura village five years ago and did not have an issue from this marriage. He said recently her sister-in-law had an issue and the mother-in-law and husband Bhim Singh started torturing Arpana mentally and physically for being issueless.

The SDPO said Arpana sprinkled kerosene oil on her body and set herself on fire and received 85 per cent burn injuries. He said her husband, who tried to douse her flames, also received 45 per cent burn injuries. Both were under treatment at the Tanda medical college where Arpana died today and Bhim Singh was still struggling for life. Bhim Singh was also booked for the crime.

The SDPO said the police had registered a case under Section 306, IPC, and arrested Nimo Devi, mother-in-law of the victim, who was remanded in judicial custody by the court. Meanwhile, the police arrested Kashmir Singh, brother-in-law of the victim, today. — OC
