Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Kewal Singh, who was arrested by Vigilance sleuths on charges of corruption and extortion was produced before a local court in Dera Bassi today which remanded him to police custody for two days.
The ASI, posted at the Zirakpur police station, was arrested by the Mohali police on Thursday.
Police officials said the owner of a saloon in Zirakpur had alleged in her complaint that the ASI, along with his accomplice property dealer, had extorted Rs 50,000 from her. He threatened her to implicate her in a false case of immoral trafficking.
After investigations, the allegations against the accused were found true, following which a case under Sections 354, 384, 452, 506 and 120 B and Sections 7 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act had been registered on Thursday.
Police sources said the ASI was arrested from the police station while the second accused, Ram Singh, had been absconding.
