SIT formed to check drug menace, UT tells HC

CHANDIGARH: To check the drug menace in Chandigarh, the Administration has constituted a special investigation team (SIT), the Punjab and Haryana High Court was informed today.

To check the drug menace in Chandigarh, the Administration has constituted a special investigation team (SIT), the Punjab and Haryana High Court was informed today.

The court was told that SIT comprised an Inspector, three Sub–Inspectors and a woman police officer. Information regarding this was given by UT SP Ish Singhal. He also submitted a report, giving details about the source of drugs in the city. The Bench was told that newly constituted SIT would probe the source of drugs, its manufacturers and act accordingly. Details regarding the drug de-addiction centres functioning in the city were also furnished.

Giving details, the report stated that nine cases, relating to the sale of charas, had been registered since January 1. Nine persons were arrested with 823 gm of the contraband. The Chandigarh Police also recovered 9.730 kg of ganja, 659 injections, 259 gm of poppy husk, 406.184 gm of smack and 54 gm of marijuana.
