YAMUNANAGAR: Two girls suffered serious burns after their father allegedly locked them along with their three-year-old brother inside a room and set it on fire in Hamida Colony here today.

Two girls suffered serious burns after their father allegedly locked them along with their three-year-old brother inside a room and set it on fire in Hamida Colony here today. Three others who tried to rescue the children were also injured, while the boy, Shamim, escaped unhurt.

Mahi (6) and Jiya (5), both daughters of accused Shokat Ali; Rajbir, Gulshan and Luxmi were taken to a local hospital, which referred the two girls to the PGI, Chandigarh.

Shokat allegedly had an argument with wife Shaina in the morning after which she left the house. Shokat allegedly used petrol from his motorcycle to set his single-room rented house on fire, locking the children inside, before fleeing.

Neighbours came to the rescue of the children after hearing their cries.

SHO (City) Rajeev Miglani said Hamida police post in charge had been sent to the PGI to record the statement of the girls and their mother.
