New Delhi, February 3

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has submitted a memorandum to the University Grants Commission (UGC), demanding an extension of the deadline for claiming arrears under doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships.

The student wing also urged the UGC to instruct its nodal officers to simplify the documentation process, ensure cooperation from staff members and extension of hours for grievance redressal services in the universities.

The student organisation appreciated the commission’s efforts in disbursing pending fellowship dues and arrears up to December 2023. However, it also highlighted the challenges that the students were facing in meeting the prescribed deadline of February 8, 2024.

The ABVP members stated that these challenges included shortage of staff, limited time for inquiry and documentation, restricted access to the UGC portal and cumbersome procedures at universities. “Thus, we urge the UGC to extend the deadline for claiming arrears, keep the Scholarship Fellowship Management Portal open for longer hours each month and instruct universities to streamline claim procedures,” they added.

ABVP national general secretary Yagywalkya Shukla said, “Measures outlined in the ABVP’s memorandum to the UGC address hardships faced by students, besides ensuring fair and efficient disbursement of pending fellowship dues.”
