DCW plans to tie up with Twitter to curb cyber crime

NEW DELHI:In a bid to curb cyber crime against women, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) intends to collaborate with Twitter India and other social media platforms for its cyber crime cell, said the panel chairperson Swati Jai Hind during a one-day conclave on Women Safety and Empowerment today.

In a bid to curb cyber crime against women, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) intends to collaborate with Twitter India and other social media platforms for its cyber crime cell, said the panel chairperson Swati Jai Hind during a one-day conclave on Women Safety and Empowerment today.

Chairperson of Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights Ramesh Negi said, “We need to have counselling mechanisms to address cyber crime, especially against children.”

The divide between the real world and the virtual world is decreasing and the body has requested the Ministry of External Affairs to check the sexual history of a person before issuing visas, said Stuti Narain Kacker, chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

Organised by Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues at the US State Department and NGO Shakti Vahini in collaboration with the DCW, the event saw good participation from child rights panels, officials from the government departments of Delhi and two other states along with representatives of commissions.

Gracing the occasion as the chief guest, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal asked political parties to rise above politics in addressing concerns surrounding women and child safety. Ministers from WCD ministries of Bihar and Chhattisgarh and senior representatives from the US Government also participated in the conclave.

Women and Child  (WCD), Bihar, Minister Kumari Manju Verma said the Bihar Government is doing a lot to improve the situation of women in the state.

According to her, the Bihar Government’s move to prohibit alcohol in the state has brought down number of cases of molestation and eve-teasing faced by women and girls there. The government took the decision notwithstanding the revenue generated by alcohol business was around Rs 5,000 crore in the state, added Verma.

Chhattishgarh WCD Minister Ram Shila Sahu said there are 27 districts in Chhattishgarh and each district has a one-stop centre. She shared that they have a women helpline number 181. The helpline has been very helpful to the women and girls of Chhattisgarh.

Before that representative of the Union WCD Ministry informed that 141 one-stop centres have been built throughout the country to assist victims of sexual assault and women helpline is operational in 21 states.

He said Rs 200 crore from Nirbhaya fund has been transferred to victim compensation fund and Beti Bachavo, Beti Padhavo scheme is operational in 160 districts of the country.

The ministry is preparing a Standard Operative Procedure for dealing with matrimonial disputes of NRIs.

Mary Kay Carlson, Charge d’Affaires, US Embassy, opined no economy can function if 50 per cent of the population i.e. women is not included in the policy making process while observing that the situation in India is better than that in many countries and expressed all support to different states for partnerships.
