DU admission process kicks off

B.Com and B.A. (Hons.) English undergraduate programmes followed by Economics and Mass Media/ Journalism continue to be the most desired courses in Delhi University (DU) whose online registration for merit-based admissions at undergraduate level in its 64 colleges kicked off on Monday.

Around 6,300 aspirants registered in the first one and a half hour of registration process at the university portal (www.du.ac.in), said Dr Ashutosh Bhardwaj, OSD Admissions at Delhi University.

“The two most sought after courses are B.Com. and B.A. (Hons.) English. In sports category, the maximum registrations are for basketball and in Extra Curricular Activities (ECA), the maximum applications are for dance category,” he said while adding that there has been an overwhelming response from the applicants since registration started at 6 pm today.

“Open Days” sees anxious aspirants

Earlier today, “Open Days”, a ten-day counselling session to be conducted by the DU till May 31, was thronged by interested applicants accompanied by parents at the conference centre on North Campus.

Apart from the usual sight of young students who were eager to know about admission process and courses they were keen for one 66-year-old retired central government employee Nagesh Chaddha caught the eye of almost every participant in the session.

Chaddha, who topped in Urdu diploma last year at the university, had come to find out which course he could take up next.

Having a passion for Urdu that stems from his thirst to decode some manuscripts he inherited from his father, Chadha is awaiting result in Advanced Diploma in Urdu.

“I like to keep myself busy and wish to upgrade my knowledge. I have interest in personality development and social work. Was here to see if I could take German language,” said Chadha who has 20 years of experience in PR.

Chadha’s zeal amused the coordinators at the Open House which saw around 600 participants.

With cut offs for DU admissions usually remaining high, there were some, like Muskan Jain and Urja Jain, from Punjabi Bagh who were relieved after knowing that DU offers mass media and journalism courses both based on cut-off and entrance while there were others like Nandini Nagpal who were keen for admission in science programmes.

Deputy Dean of Students' Welfare Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, said the Open House saw good response with a variety of questions ranging from how to compute the best four, eligibility criteria and courses that the university is offering, among others being some prominent ones.

Students, like Anjali Sharma who had come from Kurukshetra with her mother, enquired about criteria, including whether mathematics was compulsory for economics and journalism and if certificates of participation in NNC activities carry any benefit in admission to undergraduate courses.
