New Delhi, February 18

With the arrest of Sanjeev alias Mukesh and Arvin, the Special Cell of the Delhi Police today claimed to have busted a gang that was circulating fake currency notes in Uttar Pradesh and NCR regions.

Fake currency notes of Rs 100 denomination amounting to Rs 6 lakh has been seized from their possession. A car and two mobile phones have also been seized, the police said.

They were arrested from near Nanaksar Gurdwara in Sonia Vihar where they were sitting inside their car. On some suspicion, the police checked the car. Then, the duo was arrested, the police said.

According to the police, the public — after the circulation of high-value new currency notes in India – does not normally verify the genuineness of currency notes of Rs 100 or lower denomination.

The seized currency notes are apparently so well made that in day-to-day dealing, it would have been difficult to identify those as fake.

Both the accused belong to Shamli in Uttar Pradesh. They received the fake currency notes from eastern UP-based sources. These are supplied to buyers in different districts of UP, other states and also in the NCR region.

The interrogation has clearly indicated that the eastern UP-based sources procure the fake currency from Nepal. That in turn comes from Pakistan. The questioning also revealed that the supply and circulation of fake currency have significantly increased in the past two months in the Uttar Pradesh area, the police said.
