New Delhi, March 22

In an incident, five miscreants fired at police officials and disappeared in the crowd in South Delhi this evening, said an official.

The police received a specific intelligence  information that a gang of criminals active in South Delhi has proceeded to Kosi Kalan, Mathura, to procure large number of illegal weapons.

It was found that the gang  – involved in extortion and other dreaded crime – was trying to eliminate its rivals and also commit some major crimes. Inputs revealed that the gang freely uses firearms while committing crime.

Further, it emerged that after procuring the weapons from Hodal, the gang would reach Delhi through Faridabad. Anticipating their movement, a trap was laid on Ekant Marg (Karni Singh Shooting Range), Tughlakabad.

Around 4.10 pm, the suspect vehicle, a black Tata Safari (bearing Delhi registration number) was located and directed to stop. The vehicle stopped for a brief movement and then suddenly after hitting the barricade tried to run over police personnel.

The five inmates of the vehicle also opened fire and two rounds were fired from inside the vehicle, said the official.

Personnel returned fire bursting one of the rear tyres of the vehicle. Despite that, they continued to drive the vehicle for another kilometre.

Later, they took a turn towards Sangam Vihar. However, since the lane ahead was narrow, they crashed into a standing Brezza car, after which they abandoned the Safari and fled in different directions. Due to highly populated area, the criminals mixed in the crowd and disappeared. The gang has been identified, which has committed a number of shooting incidents. Police have recovered five pistols and nine live and two empty rounds from the car.
