GGSIPU’s 16th convocation held

At the 16th convocation ceremony of Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) on Tuesday, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi VK Saxena emphasised the significance of university alumni, referring to them as “brand ambassadors.” A total of 24,708 students were conferred with degrees, including 78 Gold medallists and 82 PhD holders.

During the event, Hemant K Arya was honoured with a gold medal in memory of the former registrar of the university, late BP Joshi. Additionally, Manisha Puri received the Sidharth Khitolia Award for her outstanding work in the field of architecture.

Presiding over the ceremony, Chancellor of the university and Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, VK Saxena, commended the integrative approach of the university, blending ancient knowledge with modern fields like design, innovation, automation, robotics, pharmaceuticals and AI. He underscored the importance of character reflected in speech, contrasting it with the mere reflection of images in water.

He said, “The image is reflected both in the water and in our speech, but water reflects only the picture, whereas, the speech reflects the character of a human being.”

Padma Shri awardee Prof Mahesh Verma, Vice-Chancellor, highlighted the university’s remarkable growth from a small temporary campus at Kashmere Gate to two expansive campuses in Dwarka and East Delhi. He emphasised the university’s achievements, including receiving the highest A++ Grade in the 3rd cycle of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accreditation and ranking 74th in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

Verma highlighted, “From a small temporary campus at Kashmere Gate, the university has grown up to two huge campuses with over 90,000 students, 191 programmes, across 18 schools of studies, 3 centres of excellence and 113 affiliated institutions across Delhi and NCR.”

BVR Subrahmanyam, CEO of Niti Aayog, delivered the convocation address, lauding the university’s name after the 10th Sikh Guru Gobind Singh and the land of Pandavas. He stressed India’s aim to become the largest higher education system by 2047, focusing on four key areas: providing access, promoting research, fostering innovation, and offering holistic education.
