In a first in the city, a government school has got an international-level hockey astro turf which has been constructed within 12 months and at a cost Rs 3 crore less than the estimated budget.

The astro turf, at the school in Ghuman Hera village in Southwest Delhi, was inaugurated today by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his Deputy Manish Sisodia.

This will be the third synthetic turf in Delhi, the other two being at the National Stadium and Shivaji Stadium.

"This is the first hockey astro turf to be built in a school in India. There are two more in the capital one in National Stadium and another in Shivaji Stadium, but they are not open for common public," Kejriwal said at the inaugural event.

"The work for this stadium has been completed within a year and the PWD has managed to construct it at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore while the estimated expenditure was Rs 7.5 crore," he added.

The Chief Minister also lauded the sportsmen of the country saying, "Since the governments do not help players much, I salute the heights they have reached and the laurels they have brought to the country with their own efforts."

Reportedly, a government school in Kozhikode district of Kerala also boasts of an astro turf on its premises.
