The authorities concerned should impose penalty on people spitting, defecating and littering public places in the city, said BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi while inaugurating a workshop, Capacity Building on Star Rating of Garbage Free Cities.
She emphasised on use of traditional utensils than that of plastic. Plastic plates, cups, glasses and other things not only chock the drains, but also cause cancer.
The municipal bodies do not work in planned manner. They just collect garbage and dump it to the landfill sites which is a total waste of energy. It can be used for generating bio-gas by setting up bio-methanisation plants nearby eateries, hotels and restaurants. Tree leaves can also be used for generating gas, said Lekhi addressing the participants at workshop organised jointly by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the New Delhi Municipal Council.
Construction waste should be scientifically disposed of to prevent air as well as water pollution, she said.
Every city has drains for rain water. But these drains are chocked with tree leaves that are never cleaned. The municipal bodies should make a plan for water harvesting, cleaning drains to save rain water from going to the river. Drains are covered to make illegal construction. The authorities concerned should stop such constructions, she said.
