LG directs city agencies to finish solid waste management in 16 months

NEW DELHI:Lt Governor Anil Baijal today directed the city agencies to complete management of municipal solid waste within 16 months asking Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash to finalise a plan for the same.

Lt Governor Anil Baijal today directed the city agencies to complete management of municipal solid waste within 16 months asking Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash to finalise a plan for the same.

Baijal also directed the three corporations to ensure that no methane fires occur at the three landfill sites and for this, they should take help of experts of the Union Ministry of Science and Technology and India Institute of Technology, Delhi.

The Lt Governor was reviewing the detailed action plan of various agencies/stakeholders on measures to combat air pollution.

“The Lt. Governor directed the Principal Commissioner (Urban Development) of the Delhi Government and Commissioners of three municipal corporations to rework their action plan keeping in mind 100 per cent management of solid waste, including biodegradable components as well as construction and demolition waste,” read a statement issued by the Raj Niwas this evening.

“The plan should cover a timeframe not exceeding 16 months and also indicate the exact requirement of funds. The Chief Secretary has been asked to coordinate and finalise it,” it added.

Baijal also asked the three municipal commissioners to procure requisite mechanical sweepers, litter pickers, water sprinklers within a stipulated time.

The city’s environement department is also organising a trial run of anti-smog gun at Anand Vihar, ISBT on December 20.

On its part, the transport department will procure 2000 buses (1000 buses by DTC and 1000 Cluster), last-mile connectivity will be improved and route rationalisation of entire public transport will be done in a timebound manner, incentive scheme for replacement of approximate 35 lakh Bharat Stage-II two wheelers to electric vehicles will be explored, pollution under control (PUC) process to be linked with insurance and Vahan software, and automation of existing fitness centre at Burari and setting up of two automated fitness centres would be done on top priority.
