New Delhi, December 25
A 32-year-old doctor and three others were arrested today for throwing acid on the woman doctor at a crowded market in west Delhi on Tuesday morning.

The doctor had proposed to the victim several times, but as she refused, he decided to teach her a lesson.
The accused have been identified as Dr Ashok Yadav, who is working as a senior resident doctor at ESIC Hospital in west Delhi's Basai Darapur area. He had completed his MBBS from Russia. The other accused are Ashok's friend, Vaibhav (20), who hired two juveniles for Rs 25,000 to throw acid on the victim, Dr Amrita Kaur, who had completed her MBBS from Belarus near Russia. She and Yadav have known each other through common friends. Vaibhav earlier worked at a call centre. The juveniles who cannot be named have also been apprehended.

The victim hails from Hoshiarpur, Punjab and is presently residing at rented accommodation in Hari Nagar, west Delhi. She is working as a senior resident doctor at the ESIC Hospital.

The police had formed 12 teams to investigate the case. They also learnt that the accused had chased the victim from her residence and harmed her when they found an opportunity at the market in Rajouri Garden.

The police ruled out robbery as a motive for the crime and focused on probing personal enmity as the reason for the incident. The teams questioned Kaur's friends and colleagues to determine whether anyone held a grudge against her.

The police zeroed in on Ashok, a friend of the victim.

"He tried to mislead us, but later broke down and blew the lid off the plot. He stated that he had proposed to her for marriage several times, but she refused every time. Ashok narrated this fact to his close friend Vaibhav and said that he wanted to teach her a lesson. Vaibhav told him that he knew some people who could carry out the plan. Vaibhav then brought two juveniles for executing this plot for Rs 25,000," said Pushpendra Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West District).
The four accused stay in the same colony at Hari Nagar and know one another, according to Kumar. The police have also not found a criminal background of the two juveniles.
Vaibhav handed over the money with photographs of the victim to the juveniles. A few days before committing the crime, they practised the act to ensure that it is done successfully. "On December 17, they had also tried to throw acid on the victim, but did not get a chance, because she was sitting inside a car," said the officer.
On Tuesday, Kaur had left for work on her Activa scooty. At about 9.20 am, when she reached in front of Chawla Jewellers, the main market at Rajouri Garden in west Delhi, two boys on a motorcycle came from behind.
"The driver lifted her bag placed between her legs. The bag contained a pink-coloured purse, five debit cards, PAN card, driving license, an iPhone 4s mobile phone and Rs 5,000. The pillion rider flung an acid-like solution at her. Due to the burning sensation, she stopped her scooty and started shouting for help. She sustained burns on her right eye, face and right hand," said Kumar.
The police registered a case in connection with the incident at the Rajouri Garden police station.
