Proclaimed offender nabbed after 18 years

NEW DELHI:The police of Vasant Kunj (South), South District, has arrested an absconding criminal Shambhu, (41), who had jumped ‘parole’ and was declared proclaimed offender by the court.

The police of Vasant Kunj (South), South District, has arrested an absconding criminal Shambhu, (41), who had jumped ‘parole’ and was declared proclaimed offender by the court. A cash reward of Rs 1 lakh was declared on his arrest, said police.

Long time back in 1999, information was received from Hindu Rao Hospital that two persons Sampuran and Vinod Kumar were brought in the hospital after sustaining grievous injuries.

Immediately, local police from Ashok Vihar reached the hospital and found that Sampuran and Vinod Kumar, both had sustained grievous injuries from sharp-edged weapon. Victim Sampuran was declared brought dead by the doctors and victim Vinod Kumar was undergoing treatment. On the statement of injured Vinod Kumar, a case was registered and investigation was taken up by police.

During investigation, accused Shambhu, his brother Amarnath were arrested and two juveniles were apprehended. It was revealed that both accused and deceased Sampuran were engaged in the sale of illicit liquor and other criminal activities in the area. Both had old rivalry on the issue of having supremacy in the area.

After commencement of trial in 2004, accused Shambhu and Amarnath were convicted of life imprisonment. In 2008, accused Shambhu was granted ‘parole’ by the Delhi High Court for one month. After completion of ‘parole’, the accused didn’t report back and jumped the ‘parole’.

Thereafter, an NBW was issued against accused Shambhu and was declared a proclaimed offender.
