Prospective students throng DU grievance cell

As in the past, colleges under the Delhi University are facing huge rush and adding to their disappointment are procedures for undergraduate admissions. Amid the chaos, the Grievances and Redressal Cell gets a fair share of complaints each day.

Amandeep Kaur (18) visited the cell operated by the University’s Students’Welfare Department regarding her marksheet. “I completed my Class 12 through NIOS and have been asked to wait for a month for the marksheet. My seat is locked in Mata Sundari College for BA Punjabi and I am afraid if I would lose it as the college administration is asking me to submit it urgently,” Kaur said as she sought guidance from the cell without a satisfactory response. “They are saying who would be held responsible if I fail to produce the marksheet even after the said period?”

The rules require students to submit originals at the  admission. Cell’s member, Dr Sukanto Dutta said, “As per the norms, we ask students to produce certificates within 15 days. But, the college principal decides in crucial cases.”

He said most problems arise as many students do not follow information bulletins on the website and also ignore communications sent via emails and SMSes.

“Yesterday, a student came from Assam. She missed her Extra Curricular Activities test for reaching a day later. We counselled her to not lose hope and wait for the next cut-off list,” said Dr Dutta.

Since last year, DU has done away with cash and challan system for fee payment and adopted centralised digital payment system. That too runs into trouble zones as coordinators narrated incidents where students forgot their registration ID and passwords.

Then, there are complaints of money being debited from student’s account but not credited with the university. "This happens when students refresh the window while the payment is in process,” Dr Dutta said as one of the reasons for incomplete transactions. — TNS
